5.56 vs. .300 Blackout and Other Tactical Carbine Calibers

The 60-second answer

There is no universal winner. For most new AR-pattern owners, 5.56 NATO is the practical baseline. .300 Blackout stands out in short and suppressed systems. A 9mm PCC can be compact and approachable, while .45 ACP, 10mm, 5.7×28, 7.62×39 and .308 fill more specific roles.

Critical .300 Blackout safety rule: Never store or stage .300 BLK and 5.56 ammunition or loaded magazines together. A .300 BLK cartridge may enter some 5.56 chambers and create a catastrophic failure if fired. Check the barrel marking, ammunition box and cartridge every time. Use separate, clearly marked containers and magazines; color alone is not enough.
.223 and 5.56 are not names to treat casually. A firearm marked 5.56 NATO commonly accepts .223 Remington, but chamber specifications and manufacturer instructions control. Never assume that a firearm marked only .223 Remington is approved for 5.56 NATO ammunition.

Suppressed-carbine comparison

A suppressor reduces muzzle sound and flash; it does not make a firearm silent. Confirm caliber rating, barrel-length restrictions, mounting, alignment and ammunition requirements with both manufacturers.

Which one fits the job?

Frequent, affordable practice

Start with 5.56 or 9mm. Both have deep ammunition support and broad platform choices.

Short suppressed AR

Compare .300 Blackout. Evaluate supersonic and subsonic loads separately rather than treating them as interchangeable performance.

Suppressed PCC

Compare 9mm and .45 ACP. Platform action, magazines and intended ammunition matter as much as bore size.

AK-pattern preference

7.62×39 is the natural baseline. Magazine geometry, ammunition and host quality deserve special attention.

Lightest compact system

Consider 5.7×28. Recoil and ammunition weight are low, while price and platform selection remain more specialized.

Full-power rifle need

Move to .308 only when the benefit justifies the size. Recoil, blast, ammunition weight and rifle weight all increase.

Specialized AR and suppressed options

These are worth knowing, but they should not crowd the first-time buyer’s decision. They fit narrower roles and generally require more deliberate ammunition planning.

Efficient projectiles and better distance performance than 5.56, with higher ammunition cost and less shelf depth.

Hunting / distance crossover

6.5 Grendel

Extends AR-15 reach and projectile weight, but magazines, bolts and ammunition are more specialized.

Large-frame suppressed specialty

8.6 Blackout

A heavy-projectile, short-barrel concept for compatible large-frame or bolt-action systems. Ammunition, barrels and suppressors require exact verification.

Where are .350 Legend, .450 Bushmaster and .458 SOCOM? They are useful specialty cartridges, but their strongest fit is hunting or large-bore niche use. We will address them in a separate specialty and hunting-caliber guide instead of presenting them as mainstream personal-defense choices.

  2. Price the practice: confirm current local and online ammunition supply before selecting a less-common cartridge.
  3. Confirm compatibility: read the exact barrel, firearm and ammunition markings and follow the owner’s manual.
  4. Test safe function: use manufacturer-approved ammunition and verify reliable operation in the exact firearm.
  5. Plan suppression correctly: verify caliber rating, barrel restrictions, mounting system, alignment and projectile stability.
  6. Budget the complete system: include magazines, optic, safe storage, hearing protection, ammunition and professional training.

Common questions

Is 5.56 or .300 Blackout better?

5.56 is usually easier and less expensive to practice with. .300 BLK offers advantages in short and suppressed systems. The better choice depends on the firearm, load, budget and job.

Are .300 Blackout supersonic and subsonic loads used the same way?

No. They can differ substantially in velocity, trajectory, energy, sound and reliable cycling. Confirm the exact load’s intended use and function in the firearm.

Is a 9mm PCC always softer-shooting than 5.56?

No. Many direct-blowback PCCs have a distinct recoil impulse. Firearm weight and operating system matter as much as the cartridge label.

Why consider .45 ACP instead of 9mm in a PCC?

Many common .45 ACP loads are subsonic, and some shooters prefer the platform. The tradeoffs include heavier ammunition, lower capacity and higher training cost.

Does 10mm replace a rifle cartridge?

No. It expands PCC capability but remains a handgun cartridge. Compare the entire firearm, load and intended distance rather than energy figures alone.

Can one suppressor cover several calibers?

Some suppressors are multi-caliber, but bore size alone is not approval. Verify pressure rating, barrel limits, ammunition restrictions and mounting compatibility with the manufacturer.
